AISI 430

Ferritic Stainless Steel

Material Overview

AISI 430 - Ferritic Stainless Steel

Material Type

Type: Ferritic, magnetic grade

Key Benefit: Cost-effective with good heat resistance

Corrosion Resistance

Moderate corrosion resistance - better than carbon steel but less than 304. Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion and mild chemical environments. Magnetic properties make it suitable for specific applications.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 450-550 MPa
Hardness: ~150 HB
Magnetic: Yes (Ferritic structure)

Applications

  • Exhaust components and automotive trim
  • Kitchen equipment and appliances
  • Decorative architectural trims
  • Interior automotive parts
  • Fasteners and hardware
  • Heating elements and furnace parts

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective: Lower cost than austenitic grades
  • Heat Resistance: Good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures
  • Formability: Good forming and drawing properties
  • Magnetic: Useful for magnetic applications

Processing Characteristics

  • Welding: Fair - requires pre-heat and post-weld annealing
  • Formability: Good cold forming, better than carbon steel
  • Machinability: Good machinability
  • Heat Treatment: Can be annealed but not hardened
