AISI 4140 Alloy Steel

Versatile Chromium-Molybdenum steel known for its toughness, high fatigue strength, and abrasion and impact resistance.

AISI 4140: The Industry Standard for Toughness

AISI 4140 is a low alloy steel containing chromium, molybdenum, and manganese. It is widely used across numerous industries and is an excellent choice due to its toughness, high fatigue strength, and abrasion and impact resistance.

Key Features & Properties

  • Strength: 700-1200 MPa (depending on Q&T condition)
  • Hardness: Up to 55 HRC
  • Fatigue Resistance: Excellent fatigue strength makes it ideal for dynamically stressed parts.
  • Through-Hardening: Good hardenability allows for uniform properties throughout the section.

Typical Applications

  • Heavy-duty shafts and spindles
  • Drilling collars and mining components
  • Gears, axles, and hydraulic cylinders
  • Bolts and fasteners

Technical Specifications

AISI 4140 is typically supplied in the quenched and tempered condition. It can be further surface hardened by flame or induction hardening and by nitriding.
